Hi there!
The first question we always get is: what on earth is Phab?
Phab is charity-based society who take children and young people with disabilities from the Nottingham area on exciting day-trips and events. Some favourite past events have included our Panto and Pizza Making trip and our annual Alton Towers trip. We typically run 8 events a year but society members can attend as many or as few of these events as they like- there is no pressure at all! When attending trips society members can expect to be paired one-to-one with a young person with disabilities acting in dual capacity as both carer and friend for the day.
There is plenty to get involved with in Phab Soc outside of these core activities too!
We hold regular alcoholic and non-alcoholic socials; these usually take place the week of or before a core event so you can get to know other society members and the committee prior to this. Throughout the year we hold various skills and employability workshops. A fan favourite from previous years has been our Makaton training workshop (Makaton is a form of sign language often used by those with disabilities) which we are arranging again for 2023/2024. We also hold a big annual volunteer thank you event because ultimately Phab Soc couldn’t run without our Phab-u-lous volunteers and society members!
We have some really exciting plans for this year and would love for you to join us regardless of your experience level (we provide all the training you will need!). Phab is a hugely rewarding and friendly society and community to be a part of; I can’t express enough how much being part of Phab has shaped my university experience and I would really encourage anyone reading this with an interest in working with people with disabilities to get involved.
A Phab Soc membership costs £3.
Please message our lovely Volunteer Liaison Officer at: hannah.round@phabnottingham.co.uk and she will happily answer any questions you might have.
Phab love,
Pegah (Phab Soc President)
The core aims of Phab Soc are:
– To promote and encourage opportunities for young people with disabilities and non-disabled people to share experiences on a genuinely equal basis, thereby contributing towards a fully inclusive society
– To provide respite to the parents/carers of children and young adults with disabilities
– To give these children and young adults opportunities to have experiences that they may not otherwise have the chance to do (whether that be for financial, logistical or other reasons)
– To provide them with care and companionship and ensure they have a great time
– To support them in their transition to adulthood
– To increase awareness of disabilities (particularly among the student community) and equip non-disabled individuals with the knowledge and skills to support those that have disabilities
