About This Society

Formed in 1979, Nottingham Medics RUFC have a proud history of both playing rugby and creating a strong social network that extends right from our 1st years to the most elderly of our alumni. With over 70 active members, we firmly believe in the importance of having of having a distraction away from the rigours of a demanding course and rugby provides the perfect means. Teamwork, perseverance and commitment are qualities that extend from the pitch right through to our professional lives.

Whilst a large proportion of our club are undergraduate medical students, we welcome a huge range of students into our club from other courses, and welcome players of all abilites. This includes Graduate Entry medical students based in Derby, all healthcare courses and those courses within the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. Alongside talented players from a huge range of other non-healthcare courses we believe our club offers the best standard of rugby besides the Universities high performance teams, in a welcoming and inclusive team environment.

We train twice a week (Mondays 7-8:30pm and Thursday 9-10pm) with the Monday sessions being held at Nottingham Casuals Rugby club (which is where we also play our home games), and Thursday sessions at a local 4G facility in West Bridgeford.

We have 3 competitive teams who play regularly throughout the season – our 1st and 2nd team who both won the National Association of Medical School (NAMS) competition for the first time in their history in 2022, both reaching the final the following year in 2023. Alongside this we are a founding member of the MANES league, a national medics rugby league that was formed in 2023, and provides competitive games throughout the year on Saturdays against other medical and student rugby societies. We have a pre-clinical team that plays in the University of Nottingham Intramural Sports competiton every Wednesday, providing younger boys the opportunity to get a run out on a Wednesday afternoon and stake their claim for a Saturday 1st XV shirt.

We also enter the IMS Touch rugby competition that takes place on the 4G facility on sunday evenings at University Park campus and is extremely enjoyable and very beneficial for fitness.

Being part of NMRUFC does not end upon graduation and each November we host the annual alumni ball following our legendary old boys game bringing all generations of the club together. Every member of the club will tell you how much they enjoy being a part of NMRUFC and how the team spirit extends both on and off the field.

If you’d like more information about the club, or are interested in joining we are always looking for new members – please reach out to us via our instagram account linked below.
