About This Society

What is WAMS?

Widening Access to Medical School (WAMS) is a student led project at the University of Nottingham that aims to make medical admissions and, in turn, the medical profession representative of the society it serves. We aim to make medicine more accessible for people whose backgrounds are currently underrepresented in medicine – widening participation (WP) students. This could include socioeconomic background, ethnicity, age, gender, refugee status etc.

As a group we have a number of core aims. These are:

  • To increase aspirations (primarily of younger students)
  • To provide medicine application guidance (primary for older students)
  • To advocate for prospective WP students from within the medical school

What does WAMS do?

We run a number of events for prospective medical students throughout the year, both in person and online. As a volunteer with us, you will be able to assist WAMS with a variety of different events and activities. Listed below are some examples of activities that you may be able to assist with this upcoming year:

  • School visits (and virtual visits) – to increase aspirations for younger students considering medicine, to give application guidance for students applying for medicine, and to provide teacher education.
  • Events – larger scale events mainly covering application guidance and medical course insight/information but also other events, such as mock MMIs. These events may be run in person or online this year.
  • Assisting with the WAMS website – a hub for who we are, what we do, upcoming events, application information, a basic introduction to medicine and signposting to other resources. As a volunteer you may be able to help with creating content for the website, or aiding maintenance.
  • Social media – as a volunteer you may be able to create content for our social media accounts.
  • Help at open days/offer holder days.

Do I need previous experience to volunteer?

You do not need to have any previous experience of volunteering to volunteer with WAMS, although we welcome those with any experience working with WP students. You also are not required to be from a WP background – we have students from all backgrounds, all years and all pathways into medicine.

How can I get involved?

1. Please fill out the form below if you are interested in volunteering with WAMS. Please note this is only an expression of interest form; if you decide to complete this form, we will be in touch via email in future regarding specific events and volunteering opportunities. There is no minimum requirement for volunteering with us – you can get involved with as many events as you’d like and so even if you are unsure it’s worth signing up.

2. Buy membship on the SU website (https://su.nottingham.ac.uk/activities/view/wams). It only costs £1 and help us for administration purposes and to run our events.
